Gli itinerari suggeriti hanno lo scopo di evidenziare un aspetto particolare della profonda religiosità popolare che sin dal Medioevo ha caratterizzato la nostra terra, una religiosità testimoniata dalla presenza di eremi, oratori, santuari, abbazie che hanno attirato per secoli folle di fedeli in preghiera dinanzi all'immagine che più di ogni altra parla di amore e di speranza: la Croce.
Nei luoghi della fede l'immagine del Crocifisso, scolpito in legno, dipinto su tavola o affrescato sulle pareti delle cappelle e delle chiese, è ovunque presente anche se spesso non conosciamo il nome di colui che lo ha raffigurato.
Molte delle opere un tempo disseminate sul territorio ora sono raccolte nei Musei civici e diocesani o nelle Pinacoteche per proteggerle e salvaguardarle, altre purtroppo sono andate disperse o perdute, altre ancora rischiano di scomparire minacciate dal tempo, come la Crocifissione a malapena Ieggibile nella stupenda Abbazia di S. Urbano.
I tre itinerari proposti percorrono le vie che congiungono Loreto a Fabriano lungo le valli del fiume Potenza, Musone ed Esino, ma invitano anche il visitatore più attento a risalire i colli e a penetrare le gole dell'Appennino alla scoperta di cittadine, borghi e castelli che conservano ancora il fascino immutato di un tempo e offrono la visione di paesaggi sempre diversi e sorprendenti.
Alcune delle opere segnalate, a causa del sisma che ha colpito le Marche nel settembre del 1997, sono state raccolte in luoghi più sicuri, altre, per la mancanza di personale addetto alla sorveglianza, sono visibili solo su appuntamento e in determinati giorni. Per questo abbiamo cercato di offrire tutte le informazioni utili per visitare i luoghi segnalati, ed anche se alcune difficoltà possono scoraggiare i più frettolosi, siamo certi che le attese non andranno deluse e la scoperta di un patrimonio religioso e artistico così coinvolgente premierà la costanza e la pazienza di quanti vorranno percorrere "Le vie della Croce".

The proposed routes aim at highlighting a particular aspect of the profound popular piety which has characterized the Marche since the Middle Ages and which is testified by the presence of hermitages, oratories, sanctuaries, abbeys that have attracted for centuries crowds of pilgrims praying in front of the image that above all speaks of love and hope: the Cross. In the places of faith the image of the Crucifix, carved or painted on wood, or frescoed on the walls of chapels and churches, is everywhere, even if we don't often know the name of the author. Many of the works, once scattered around the territory, are now gathered in municipal or dlocesan Museum or in Galleries, others unfortunately are missing or lost, others risk to disappear threatened by time as for instance the hardly readable Crucifixion in the splendid Abbey of St. Urbano.
The three proposed routes follow the roads that Iink Loreto to Fabriano, along the valleys of the Potenza, Musone and Esino rivers, but alsp invite a thoughtful visitor to climb the hills and reach the gorges of the Apennines to discover little towns, villages and castles that keep the fascination of the past unchanged and offer different and surprising landscapes. Some of the illustrated works have been removed and collected in safer places because of the earthquake which struck the Marche in September 1997, others are viewable only on request and on appointed days. We have tried to provide all the useful information to visit the places recommended and even if hurried visitors may be discouraged, we ane sure that the discovery of such an interesting religious and artistic heritage will reward the patience of those who are prepared to take "The ways of the Cross".
